In 1984, after leaving NBC's WKQX in Chicago, and moving to Dallas to launch KISS in Dallas for ABC; I met the then Columbia Records company Representative Michael Scurlock. Passionate, full of creative ideas, energy, and a wiliness to win your ears with his Artist's and Groups, Michael was on the ball. Because of my relationships with so many Recording Artists and Groups, both as a Programmer and Broadcast Network On-Air Talent; it was common to have them as guests for my shows, at events, in concert, see them backstage at concerts and in the recording studio.

Michael knew this and was quick to bring them when they where in town in what seemed like an endless parade of talent: Steve Perry, Paul McCartneyBette MidlerBilly JoelChicagoEarth, Wind & Fire, Michael BoltonAretha Franklin, Santana, The BanglesC+C Music FactoryPaul SimonGeorge Benson, AerosmithPhilip Bailey, AC/DCBarry ManilowBruce Springsteen, David BowieNeil Diamond, Kenny LogginsLoverboyEddie MoneyDolly Parton,James TaylorTommy TutoneBonnie TylerZZ Top and members of The Rolling Stones too name just a few.

In 1985 [as ABC was selling KISS in Dallas], I was transfered to KLOS and ABC Los Angeles; where I first worked with the Jon Scott and events to benefit the Bogart Cancer Research Programs. It was a series of big events, celebrity baseball games, golf tournaments, pool games, and more. The goal was clear, to raise money to benefit cancer research "in hope of cures", and to assist those in need! Clearly Jon had the support of the Industry, and the events were a huge success.
Recently, thanks to Social Network, the Internet, Karma, fate, what is suppose to be; I have reconnected with so many friends, relatives, professionals and others. Including Jon Scott, and Michael Scurlock. Recently, in a call with Jon, we discussed the past charitable events to benefit cancer cures, and Michael Scurlock. I am please to say, I have promised Jon and Michal to help get the word out, and hopefully to motivate you to attend [or at least contribution to], the:

President Reardon Co-Chairs
Care For the Homeless Benefit Gala
AFTRA National President Roberta Reardon will serve as a celebrity co-chair for the 25th Anniversary Care For the Homeless Gala in New York City on Oct. 27. She is co-chairing the event with director and fellow AFTRA member Judd Apatow ("40-Year-Old Virgin") and his wife, actor Leslie Mann.

"Care For the Homeless is a New York City nonprofit that is very close to my heart, both as a citizen of the city and as a union member and activist," said President Reardon. "This is an extremely important event in light of the fact that homelessness in New York has become worse in recent years, and has hit women and children especially hard."

The gala dinner benefit will take place at COMIX in New York City and will feature performances by AFTRA member comedians Scott Blakeman, Robert Klein, Cathy Ladman, Sherri Shepherd and Jimmy Tingle.

Care For the Homeless provides health care and social services to more than 10,000 men, women and children each year by sending teams of doctors, nurses, social workers, health educators and other professionals to more than 36 soup kitchens and shelters. Care For the Homeless works with outreach teams to provide services to those living on the streets in Manhattan and the Bronx. They also operate Susan’s Place, a shelter for 200 mentally ill and medically frail, homeless women.

The 3rd Annual Celebrity & Stuntwomen’s Awards Luncheon recognizes and honors the achievements of extraordinary women in the stunt community. These unsung “sheroes” risk their lives every day in order to help create some of the most memorable moments in film, television and commercials. Their noteworthy contributions are integral to help ensure the success of projects in the entertainment industry.
The Diamond in the Raw Foundation transforms and empowers the lives of at-risk teenage girls between the ages of 12 to18 and serves as a deterrent to gang violence, date rape, substance abuse, unwanted pregnancy and abuse that often leads to destructive cycles in at-risk communities. Their programs use creativity and the arts to enforce change and encourage those who are in doubt by helping them find their own self-worth and believe in unlimited possibilities. In addition, Diamond In the Raw Foundation hosts a variety of fundraisers to support their mission such as the Celebrity & Stuntwomen's Awards Luncheon.

“There wasn’t a dull moment!.”
--David Nathan Schwartz

“You packed so much great information into those 8 hours that my head was
spinning afterwards! Best of all, you taught every aspect of looping and
approached it from such a positive “can do” place that it was infinitely easier to
get my hands dirty and make mistakes so I could learn.” --Stuart Paap

“Class is a "wow": expansive in scope, with an approach both supportive
and challenging in exactly the right mix, and darned fun too. I know I will
never listen to a movie the same way again, now that I know what went into
those looping performances.” --John Reimer

“It was a really great day. I appreciate the fact that you
were organized and presented things clearly and
unambiguously.” --Linda J. Carter

“Thank you! I had a blast. It was educational and fun. This class is a very useful tool for
any actor. Many times actors are asked to loop their own work, and your class gives the
information and confidence actors need to go in there and get the job done right the first
time.” --Kathleen Lambert

“Loop De Loop gave me the confidence and
know-how to jump right into the world of
looping. It was such a fun environment and
I'm so grateful for the tools Johnny and Jason
gave me.” --Jeremy Glazer

“Thanks for the
informative workshop.”
–Yumi Iwama

“Thanks for a great day of learning and discovery! I had fun and am on my way to
honing a new skill.” --Gideon Emery

AFTRA National VP Holter Graham

AFTRA National VP Holter Graham

Flash!NationalOctober 2010

Holter Graham, AFTRA National Vice President, New York, has been undergoing treatment for B-Cell A.L.L, a form of Leukemia, and is six months into the ten-month chemotherapy regimen plus two-year maintenance chemo that will hopefully result in permanent remission.

Dear AFTRA Member:

Our world, and our work, are changing:
              • A proliferation of screens both tiny and enormous, all playing the same content.
              • Interactive video games grossing $200 million their first day on the market.
              • Satellite TV providers producing shows that can only be seen by their subscribers.
              • Network and local news stations, adrift in the digital marketplace, coercing and cajoling AFTRA members to do more, and more varied, types of work than our hard-won contracts allow.
              • Recording artists, embracing new technology, exploring innovative ways to make, market and distribute their music in the digital landscape.
              • Cable companies and traditional networks battling over retransmission fees because the old model of commercial earnings isn’t working as well as it used to.
              • People cutting the cord and getting all their news and entertainment from New Media sources.
These changes are challenges, but they are also opportunities. A lumbering union that refuses to see the evolution of the work and hunkers down in its old ways to ride out the storm will fail; will become irrelevant.
A vigorous, pragmatic and flexible union that grabs the opportunities new media offers and reshapes itself to be as strong, prepared and widespread as possible will care for its members for long, prosperous years to come.
A merger is when two roadways come together, traffic snarls and nobody gets where they were headed.
A new path, toward a New Union, is a platform on which to build upon our strengths, and abandon our weaknesses. A New Union, populated at the very least by everyone working in front of a camera or microphone -- by workers in every facet of our employers’ multi-tiered, fully integrated business models -- brings with it the leverage required to make sure our members have the opportunity to do quality work for a quality wage, and to earn credits towards our health care and our retirement.
The Presidents’ Forum for One New Union is, to be clear, simply the first step -- and the only logical first step. We must start from a point of firm agreement on the need for and shape of a single entertainment and information industry union for the digital 21st century. Our New Union must organize work under a union banner, while at the same time continuing to collaborate with our partners in profitability -- our employers -- to provide audiences with the highest quality work at wages that guarantee our members can live from the fruit of their labors. Doing so will enable our employers to grow their business models on the platform of our professionalism and attention to quality. They are only as good as we make them look, and we are only as valuable as the products they create in which we ply our trade. Though pugilistic at times, ours is a partnership with our employers. They cannot do it without us, and we would have little to do without them.
Let’s look forward. Let’s build on our strengths. Let’s capitalize on our flexibility and organizing successes. Let’s lay out a blank sheet of paper, roll up our sleeves and build a New Union.
Who’s in?
In solidarity,
Holter Graham
