Farewell Visit with Joey Ryan
On January 13, 2010, Art Vuolo Jr. brought a group of colleagues to visit with Joey Ryan aka Joseph Pietruska [see http://www.michiguide.com/ for more].
Kurt Kelly and Joey Ryan worked together in Detroit for at Golden West Broadcasting [as seen at 8:00 on this video] at WTWR. Joey was the on air announcer talent and voice of many Detroit area music stations in the 1970s thru 1990s including WDRQ, WTWR-Tower 92, WHFI, WKSG, booth announcer at WJBK-TV 2 and many other successful stints. Art and Joey's radio friends Bill Bailey, Kevin O'Neill, Kevin Sanderson, Kim Carson and the Reel Tom Ryan visited with Joey at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. For information on Joey and "most radio legends" contact "Radio's Best Friend", Art Vuolo at artvuolo@aol.com or visit his web site at www.vuolovideo.com also see http://kurtkelly.blogspot.com/2010/02/farewell-visit-with-joey-ryan.html

End Of A Detroit Era

In an announcement that sent shock waves through the Motor City radio community, Detroit radio icon Dick Purtan revealed yesterday that he's retiring after 45 years on the air in the market, the last 14 of which were spent in mornings on CBS Radio Oldies WOMC. "The decision did not come about easily," he admitted. "This year marks my 45th year on my radio in Detroit. And that's a long time to do anything. I've been blessed to be able to do something that I love and truly enjoyed," he said. "But lately, to be honest, I've been enjoying it a little bit less. So my wife, Gail, and I have decided that I will retire and that my last broadcast will be on Friday, March 26. It's a tough decision, but I'm convinced it is the right one." First on Purtan's post-radio to-do list: Throwing away his alarm clock, as he plans to stay up late and sleep even later.
Purtan's Legacy Written In Permanent Marker

To say Purtan's retirement will leave a large hole in the market would be an incredible understatement: He's been inducted into the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, the National Radio Hall of Fame and the National Association of Broadcasting Hall of Fame. The Detroit Radio Advertising Group gave him their inaugural Be Fabulous Lifetime Achievement Award, and he was also honored as an official torchbearer for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Purtan is extremely well-known for his radiothons to support a bunch of different causes, including raising almost $20 million for the Salvation Army, hundreds of thousands for the Children's Hospital of Michigan and over $1 million for cancer research.

"Radio has given me a unique podium to reach out to the community, and, wow, how you've always reached back. The people of Detroit and Southeastern Michigan have always given proportionally more to charities than any other area in the country -- I've seen the studies on that," he said. "You have constantly opened your hearts and wallets to your neighbors in need. Together, I think we have really made a difference, and isn't that what it's all about? Your giving spirit is something that I not only marvel at, but is also something for which I will be eternally grateful." Reflecting on the show's history, Purtan said it was serious when it needed it to be, but that he's always tried to bring some laughter in -- which he demonstrated again by closing with, "To be honest with you, I was trying to put off retirement until the Lions made it to the Super Bowl, but frankly, I've got to get some sleep."

Mike Austerman at www.michiguide.com has aggregated bunch of great Purtan coverage, including a comprehensive piece written by "Radio's Best Friend" himself, Purtan's longtime pal Art Vuolo. Catch more Purtan lore at www.keener13.com.

National Anthem 2.0
I know you're slammed by artists who would like their music played on
your station and or projects, but the musicians I represent--twin
brothers Rock Star and Super Star, have just released a truly unique
song called "National Anthem 2.0." Its purpose is to serve as a
celebration of life, a testament to our country’s values, and to pay
respect to our police officers, our firefighters, and to members of
our Armed Forces that are protecting our freedom at home and around
the world.

In fact, the U.S. Olympic Committee will be using "National Anthem
2.0" for its athletes, staff, and volunteers to motivate them to bring
home the gold from Vancouver!

I'm including a YouTube link to an HD version of a tribute to our
soldiers, which uses the song. The song is licensed through BMI and
ready to be used on your station.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhvQdwAkpok

Do you think your station would consider playing it? I think it would
fit well within your programming and with the list of celebrity
musicians that perform on this song as well as the rest of the twins
“Serenity” project, which has been launched to help kids in recovery
from substance abuse, might be found to be very appealing to your
listeners.

I can send you an mp3 of the master, or you can get the song directly
from AirPlay Direct at

http://airplaydirect.com/music/bands/31401/index.php

I can also arrange for an interview with the artist. Either way, a
response would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Matt Gabrys
